Hockey Night in Langley

Hockey Night in Canada is coming to Langley.

HNIC’s Hyundai Hockey Nation will be at the Langley Events Centre Dec. 3-5, the Township announced on Monday afternoon.

Langley is the first stop of the six communities across Canada chosen.

Hockey Night in Canada and Hyundai have partnered with the Langley Minor Hockey Association for the event. LMHA receives some priority registration for its members as well as retaining the proceeds from the raffle of a new Hyundai vehicle.

“With 1,050 participating in Langley Minor Hockey, we are extremely excited about this event,” said LMHA president Bob Woykin.

Both the Langley Chiefs and the Trinity Western Spartans hockey teams adjusted their game times and practice schedules to accommodate the event.

Extreme Green / Going green off the grid

Doug Rempel in BC Homes Magazine

Article featured in BC Homes Magazine about Doug Rempel

I have been working in the heating and ventilation industry and consulting to people building new homes for 30 years.

Sustainability, good stewardship of natural resources and concern for the environment are my passion. In 1982, my wife and I built (and still live in) one of the most energy efficient R2000 homes in Canada.

My other involvements relating to energy efficiency, comfort and health in the home include speaking on numerous radio talk shows, teaching workshops and appearing on CBC’s Code Green, a reality TV series which offered Canadian homeowners valuable information on how to reduce energy consumption in their homes. I have appeared on HGTV’s Healthy Home, on CKNW talk shows with Shell Busey, lectured at colleges and taught seminars for the Greater Vancouver Home Builder’s Association.

Mike Masterton & Doug Rempel worked together at Solace Energy in Burnaby for 30 years advising folks how to build, renovate or upgrade with energy efficiency, comfort and health in the home.

Fort Langley National Historic Site

Enclosed in a dramatic riverside stockade, the current incarnation of Fort Langley National Historic Site dates back to 1840. The fur trading post was rebuilt after an 1839 fire, and now features a striking combination of reconstructed and original buildings.

At its peak, Fort Langley sold produce to Russians in Alaska, shipped cranberries to California, and generated 2,000 barrels of canned salmon a year, much of which was exported to Hawaii. Today, visitors can touch soft beaver and black bear pelts, watch barrel-making and blacksmithing demonstrations, and chat with interpreters in period costumes. Circa 1858, Fort Langley became renowned as a jumping-off point for the Fraser River Gold Rush, and panning for gold here remains another fun experience for the entire family.

A historic highlight is the hilltop Big House, where Sir James Douglas proclaimed British Columbia a Crown Colony on November 19, 1858, and became the province's first governor. View vintage china, musical instruments, and other furnishings, and browse through a display upstairs on the local Kwantlen First Nations.

Fort Langley operated until 1886, and was declared a National Historic Site in 1955. It is open daily year-round (closed Dec 25 and 26, and Jan 31), and is directly adjacent to the historic village of the same name. Log on to the Parks Canada website on Fort Langley for more details.

The National historic site is a 10 minute walk from Fort Langley Bed and Breakfast.

CN Train station in Fort Langley

Railfans and train spotters will be interested to know the CN Station was built in 1915 on a site to the west of where it stands today, on the corner of Mavis Street and Glover Road in Fort Langley. The design was one of the Canadian Northern Railways "third class" plans used by the CN until 1924. In 1918 Canadian Northern became part of Canadian National, and the CN Station was enlarged to accommodate larger living quarters for the Station Agent. From 1918-1929 this agent was Mr. Richard Charles Simpson.

The Station was used full-time until 1972 when it was reduced to a flag stop, and passenger service was completely terminated in 1980. For a time the Station stood empty, but in 1983 it was moved to its present location and restored by the Langley Heritage Society in cooperation with the Township of Langley. It was designated a Heritage Site on Feb. 27, 1984. Mrs. Simpson’s Garden was planted in memory of the Station Agent’s wife. The station is situated 4 blocks from Fort Langley Bed and Breakfast.
